Finding Home & Keeping Her Humor

Angie found more than a place to live. She found stability, community, and a home where she can fully be herself.

When Angie talks about her life, she sprinkles in humor the way she seasons her recipes — with enthusiasm, a little flair, and just enough honesty to make you laugh out loud. “I make the best potatoes,” she says proudly. “Everyone says potatoes make you fat. Not true! I ate them three times a day growing up in Spain — and look, I was 90 pounds when I had my daughter!” Then she laughs, shaking her head. “It’s not the potatoes. Never blame the potatoes.”

Behind her jokes, Angie’s journey to Mercy Housing was shaped by heartbreak. After five years in Spain caring for her aging mother, she returned to Colorado at the urging of her daughter. Things didn’t go as she hoped. “I had one foot in the street,” she says. “I didn’t know where I was going to go.”

A longtime friend handed her an address and told her to try “just one more place.” Angie drove across town, praying the whole way. When she walked into the leasing office, she met Asia and Michelle — two people she now counts among her greatest blessings. “They made me feel welcome right away. They told me, ‘Don’t worry. You have a place to stay.’ And I cried. I knew my prayers were answered.”

Today, Angie has built a bright, welcoming home filled with shiny floors (“Mop ’n Glo and elbow grease!”), good food, and a sense of peace she hadn’t felt in years. She cooks daily, watches cooking shows like they’re master classes, and keeps an open door for neighbors, friends, and the staff who support her.

For Angie, having a place to call home has made all the difference.

“I’m 72. I’m too old for drama,” she says with a smile. “What I need is my place, my people, and my potatoes. And here, I have all of that.”
